Project Abstract:

The project aims to improve the quality of VET programmes by systematizing the collaboration of the world of business and the world of VET when developing a training programme.

The involvement of the business world in the early stages of creating a training programme will facilitate the creation of up-dated contents based on real knowledge and skills demanded in the labour life. This means that key competences, both from the business and pedagogical point of view, will be reinforced in VET curricula. They will face existing knowledge demands of current labour market, which often require a work-based learning approach for making closer business and educational worlds.

The creation of training programmes fulfilling the needs of the business sector will increase the labour market relevance of VET learners, as they would be properly trained. Such training programmes will become a guarantee for employers, as they will ensure that trainees will count on the suitable skills and knowledge. Consequently, such training programmes may lead to an increased interest of enterprises in counting on workers that have been trained in such a way.

The project will validate the methodology by the creation of a training programme, including blended learning activities and real scenarios analysis by means of ICT tools that will widen the potential audience of the programme, at the same time that follow current educational trends. This blended scope will allow partners to reach a wider audience, at the same time that respond to specific skill gaps from targeted audiences:

- Adults with experience on the field, which lack of time but are willing to become upskilled (ONLINE LEARNING)

- Youths without expertise who would need an additional effort for becoming aware of real working life (BLENDED LEARNING, including job shadowing)

Summary:

Composites are extensively used in many industrial applications, primarily in Transport. A technological sector dealing with composite repair solutions has emerged, now expanding proportionally to the extension of composites applications. GMI is a leading SME in this sector since 25 years, developing equipment for composite manufacturing, maintenance and repair. To ensure excellence, during the last 15 years GMI has invested in several EU co-funded R&D Projects, focusing on the development of innovative composite repair solutions.

Today GMI possesses in its portfolio innovations deriving from >15 R&D projects focusing in composite repair: Advanced heating solutions for curing of complicated a/c composite repairs, Repair application equipment, for high performance adhesive bonding and Smart patches enabling SHM of critical a/c components. As there is a rising demand for this type of tools, both from the aeronautical and from other related industries (aolien, petroleum platforms, civil engineering), GMI objective is to improve its commercial position to those markets exploiting its technological excellence. Apart from direct equipment sales, a variety of related services will be additionally developed (training, studies for demanding repairs, consulting, certification support, logistics, application of advanced repairs, participation to R&D projects, etc). To this end 2 phases were specified:

Phase 1- Development of a feasibility study, to examine technological, practical and economic viability issues, resulting in a realistic business plan for growth through “COmposite repair solutions for aeronautical BUSiness development COLOMBUS-1”; This phase has already been completed, following a grant won by EU.

Phase 2: COLOMBUS-2 is now submitted, including required innovation and support activities for the materialization of prepared GMI plan. A sustainable yearly increase of turnover by 20% is expected for the next years, following implementation of COLOMBUS projects.
